Have you just arrived in Rome? After a few hours of flying, the stress of looking for your suitcase and perhaps even a few hours of jet lag is normal to want to reach the center of Rome quickly and easily to relax in his hotel room or start the tours for the shortest break. However, your travel is not over yet and you must be particularly careful to avoid scams... Once in Rome, many public transport will help you to reach different neighborhoods and tourist places.
From the airport to the center of Rome :
Rome's airport (Fiumicino or Ciampino) is out of the city. The simplest option is to take a taxi that will get you to the historic center in about thirty minutes. The taxis of the city are white with the arms of Rome on the door, they are indicated in the airport by markers. They charge fixed prices from airports:
Fiumicino Airport - historic center: 50 €
Ciampino Airport - historic center: 30 €
However, as soon as you leave the airport terminal it is not uncommon for you to be approached by private taxi companies. They are to avoid because they do not always practice the prices indicated above.
Once in Rome there are several ways to get around. First of all if you are in the Italian capital for a tourist holiday know that the historic center is not very big and that you can perfectly do it by foot if the weather is good (which is often the case).
Metro, Tram and Bus :
The Metro is not very developed and pretty old in Rome. The difficulty of exploiting the undergrounds of Rome - rich in ancient monuments - slow down the work of line C. On weekdays the subway stops at 23:30 and 1:30 on weekends.
There are 3 Metro lines:
- Line A: Battistini - Anagnina
- Line B: Rebibbia - Laurentina, with a junction until Jonio (B1)
- Line C: From Pantano - San Giovanni (an extension to Ottoviano is planned)
The bus is much more developed, and many lines allow to move around the cities. The bus service is available from 5.30 am to midnight. After that, a night bus system has also been put in place to facilitate partygoers' back home. Some smartphone applications allow to know in real time how long your public transport will arrive and advise you on the best itinerary : Maps, Moovit, RightNext, Romabus and ProbusRoma.
Finally, there are 6 lines TRAM: 2, 3, 5, 8, 14 and 19. They are available from 5:30 to midnight.
Tickets :
The tickets are the same for the 3 means of transport.
You can not buy them from the driver. You can buy tickets at some tobacconist and newsstand or at the subway stations. A ticket costs 1€50 and is valid for 100 minutes.
Different pass can be more advantageous than taking single tickets.
