A day in Ostia


Between archaeological sites and beaches, Ostia is an ideal destination for a sunny afternoon not far from the eternal city.

Ostia Antica, the ruins of the ancient port city :

Ostia Antica

Located 30 kilometers west of Rome, Ostia was the port city of ancient Rome, one of the most prosperous Roman cities. Today many vestiges of this period remain in the archaeological site of Ostia Antica. This one is still in excavations but it is also open to the public.

You can discover most of the buildings that made up the city: theater, forum, baths, temples, synagogue, basilica ... The theater always hosts performances during the summer.

To make the most of the historical site, it is best to take an audio guide and count 2 hours of visits.

Opening hours: 8:30 am to 7:15 pm, the ticketing closes at 6:15 pm.

Price: full price 10€ - reduced price 5€ (EU citizens between 18 and 25 years) and free for minors and students in architecture, archeology and history of art. These prices can be increased by 2€ when there are temporary exhibitions.

The beaches of Ostia, the sea half an hour from Rome:

The beaches of Ostia are not considered like the most beautiful in Italy. However they offer a solution to the Romans who wish to go quickly to the beach for an afternoon. You will find free beaches as well as stabilimenti, seaside establishments renting parasols (between 4 and 8€ the day), deckchairs (between 5 and 12€) and huts of beaches. There are also free showers and toilets, as well as restaurants all along the waterfront.

How to reach Ostia:

The easiest way to reach Ostia is to take the train line Roma - Lido di Ostia. It departs from the Porta San Paolo station, facing the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, and serves several stops including a stop in the Roman quarter of the EUR: EUR Magliana, a stop 5 minutes' walk from the archaeological site: Ostia Antica and 4 stops near the seafront: Lido di Ostia Centro, Stella Polare, Castel Fusano and Cristoforo Colombo.

Trains leave every 15 minutes and are included in the subscription to public transport or cost the same price as a metro ticket (1€50). It takes 25 minutes to reach Ostia Antica from Rome - Porta San Paolo.

The first buses leave at 5 o'clock in the morning and the last one leaves the terminus at midnight. It is perfect to enjoy the beaches of Ostia at times when the sun is less hot and to have a picnic on the beach.
